Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates
Advanced Features, Renowned Trust Indicators, and Premium Encryption
In the world of SSL/TLS, Extended Validation SSL certificates are the gold standard, or maybe we can call it the “green” standard. This complete SSL solution not only encrypts your website, safely protecting user information from prying eyes, but it also comes with a variety of extra premium features that have proven to boost trust & clearly demonstrate that you are, in fact, someone safe to do business with. The main way EV certs do this is by way of what we call the green address bar! Granted, the only thing green about the EV address bar nowadays is the font. But the name just kind of stuck.
Not just anyone can obtain an EV SSL certificate, which activates this globally trusted & recognized green bar (especially no malicious or fake site). Before issuing your EV SSL certificate, your Certificate Authority (CA) has to first complete a thorough validation process to verify & ensure that you’re actually a legitimate business. So, if you’re a real business and you’re looking to maximize trust, boost conversion and align yourself with the big shots of the Internet – ya’ know, the companies that people already know and trust – then EV is the only way to go.
Add eye-catching trust indicators
That’s where activating these key “trust” indicators comes into play. When you receive an EV SSL certificate, you’ll be able to showcase your identity right next to the URL in the address bar. Nothing makes a stronger first impression than your verified proof of identity being the first indicator a potential customer sees.
In addition, your web address will not only read HTTPS instead of the standard HTTP, it will also have a clickable padlock next to the URL that contains crucial identifying information (business name & location) about your organization and it also lists the trusted third-party security company that is vouching for you. But most importantly, the address bar will be an unmistakable indication of your identity, which consciously and sub-consciously helps people “GO!”. That’s right, EV certificates are the only SSL products that activate the green address bar in browsers. This green bar is the most universally recognized symbol of trust across the web. It’s quite simple, when users trust, they convert. Green means go in every language! Now within a simple glance, anyone on your website will immediately know that you’re safe to do business with, which is why EV certificates are considered an investment for your business because of its huge ROI potential upside, rather than a cost which is typical of the lower-end SSL solutions.

How do I get an EV SSL?
The validation process is designed to stop fake companies, not real ones. If you are a registered business in your state or with your local government, obtaining an EV certificate is a breeze! Once you complete your EV SSL purchase, you’ll be guided through the validation process where the CA will simply need to verify a few things about your business. The best way to expedite this process is to make sure you use the CORRECT spelling of your company name.
Make sure to include your corporate identifiers such as, LLC, PTY or Inc. exactly as it was when you registered your business, commas and everything! Also, make sure to list your main phone number, and that it could be found in most public databases. If you can do that, you’ll be well on your way. If you have any issues, your dedicated account manager will be standing by to help you with any part of the process. In many cases, we have gotten EVs issued in the same day.
Business Registration – your company must be officially registered with your government.
Operational Existence – the Certificate Authority (CA) will look to verify that your organization has existed for more than 3 years. If your organization has not been in existence for more than 3 years, additional proof of operational status will be required, such as:
- Dun & Bradstreet listing
- Professional/Legal Option Letter (POL)
- Or a simple Bank confirmation letter
Address Authentication – the registered organization must have a verifiable physical address and business presence in their respective country/state.
Telephone Verification – the Certificate Authority (CA) must pull an active telephone number from an acceptable telephone directory in order to complete a verification call with the company (The most popular directories include YellowPages, Hoovers, Scoot.co.uk, Dun and Bradstreet, BBB.org – but other regional telephone directories or industry directories are also acceptable).
What good would an SSL certificate be if it didn’t encrypt? EV SSL certificates provide powerful encryption that meets or exceeds all CAB Forum and NIST standards. That means 256-bit AES symmetric encryption, a 2048-bit RSA signature key, or you have the option of Elliptic Curve Cryptography, which is lighter and faster than its counterparts. Encryption is what protects any communication between your web server and your visitors’ browsers. You’ll never have to worry about your HTTPS connections with an EV SSL certificate.
